Professor Parker headed a seminar in Budapest where I presented my Dream research: her immediate grasp of my intricate angle was stunning, and I am so looking forward to her edition of the play. Her idea of "subterranean networks of wordplay" that also involves central themes of his plays is unique and must be allowed space in a no doubt unparalleled edition of Dream.

I found this petition while doing an online search for A Midsummer Night's Dream. I'm not familiar with Dr. Parker's work, but I am astonished that a work of scholarship would be suppressed like this -- especially since Dr. Parker obviously has so much support! It seems to me like this version of A Midsummer Night's Dream should be published as soon as possible. I support this petition.

Pat Parker has taught generations of students about the magic of Shakespeare. The value of her Shakespearean insight, and in particular her analysis of A Midsummer Night's Dream, should not be underestimated or disregarded. She should be reinstated immediately.

I feel compelled to point out that my copy of the Arden Shakespeare (the 2007 version of Brooks' 1979 edition) includes, on page 87, a note to Act IV, Scene 1, line 29, Bottom's suggestion of listening to the "tongs and the bones," that helpfully mentions: "In recent times, nigger-minstrels featured 'Mr. Bones' as one of their two corner-boys."

So yeah, time for a new edition.

The Arden Shakespeare has built its formidable reputation on eminent scholarship. To jettison such a reputation in the name of supposed increased profitability can only be counterproductive. Arden will keep its profitable niche in the literary market only by continuing to employ the foremost experts on each text, and giving them the time they need to crystallize their criticism. Reinstate Dr. Parker, and publish her manuscript when it is ready.
